China Airlines Boeing 747-409, registered B-165 (Msn 24313 Ln 977), operating as CA-605 from Taipei, crashed whilst attempting a landing during Tropical Storm Ira at about 7:00am the previous day. The captain managed to avoid hitting the runway 31 approach lights, by slewing the aircraft to port so that it ended up in shallow water parallel to the end of the runway. An emergency evacuation was ordered and all passengers & crew sucessfully evacuated the aircraft onto the floating evacuation slides, There were only 23 minor injuries , but the aircraft was declared a total hull loss and was eventually scrapped at Kai Tak.
